Counseling vs. Coaching
In addition to being a coach, Nate Havens is also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado with training and experience treating people with emotional challenges. While there are similarities between Coaching and Psychotherapy, they are very different activities and it is important that you understand the differences between them. Both Coaching and Psychotherapy utilize knowledge of human behavior and motivation, behavioral change, and use the relationship between the coach/client or therapist/patient to encourage and influence change. The major differences lie in the goals, focus, and level of professional responsibility.
The focus of Coaching is the development and implementation of strategies to reach goals set by the client. Coaching may address specific personal projects, life balance, job performance or satisfaction, spiritual growth, or general conditions in a client’s life, relationships or profession. Coaching utilizes strategic planning, values clarification, brainstorming, motivational counseling and other techniques. The client’s thoughts, behaviors, emotions and physical symptoms are examined and explored as relevant sources of information related to Coaching goals.
In contrast, the primary focus of Psychotherapy is the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health “disorders”. The goals of Psychotherapy include alleviating symptoms, understanding and resolving the dynamics which create distress, modifying dysfunctional behaviors, and developing new strategies for coping with mental and emotional challenges.
Because of these differences, the roles of coach and psychotherapist can often be in conflict. Under most circumstances, it is ethically inappropriate for one person to play both roles with a client, whether concurrently or sequentially. This means that if either of us recognizes that you have a struggle or challenge that would benefit more from psychotherapeutic intervention, I will refer you to appropriate resources.

Which is best for you?
This can be determined during the initial assessment. Some people have an uneasy feeling when they hear the words counseling or therapy. If they cause hesitation for you, then you may want to consider coaching. Both can be effective depending on what you need. Certain states have laws against providing counseling or therapy services over the telephone or internet. This too can be determined during the initial assessment. If we start off in one and it is determine that another mode is needed, we can make a referral at that time.
Whether you are receiving counseling or coaching services, the focus will be on helping you today to grow more into the person that you want to be. In either service, it is important that you and us are compatible. If there is not a good fit or if what you need is beyond our scope of training, then we can provide referrals as needed.

Telephone & Online Coaching
Maybe this is the first time you have heard about telephone or online conferencing coaching. Although some clients and coaches do not operate well with this method, there are many people that thrive in this type of environment. Maybe you live in a location that does not have access to the therapy services that you are looking for. Maybe you are in a job that is high profile or requires travel, and you are helped by the convenience of telephone or online coaching.
We know that telephone and online coaching can be very effective for many people. Personally, I (Nate) found that this form of coaching was effective for me in my situation. Like any decisions you are making, you will need to evaluate the pros and cons of these services. We would love to help you consider if this is an approach that you would like to consider. Please call us for a free 20 minute consultation to see if this would be a good fit for you.

Public Speaking
One way to reach many people with the same message, is through public speaking events. Some of the general topics that can be addressed are depression, anxiety, stress management, financial struggles, sexual addictions, and unwanted attractions. We can custom make the presentation to fit your situation: small group, youth group, mixed audience, etc. If it is a topic that we are not trained in, then we may be able to connect you with other professionals that could address the specific topic. As the body of Christ, we each have different gifts, needs, and connections. Give us a call and let's talk about opportunities we can make. Let's work together in order that Jesus Christ will be glorified!
Pricing
It is very important to count the cost of any changes in our lives. We are also called to be good stewards of our resources. Due to Nate's banking background, we know that financial concerns need to be considered before determining if you want to start the coaching process. We have also seen that when people invest financially in something, they typically will work harder to meet their goals. If you think about it, many of the clients we have seen will actually save money because they realize how much money they spend on some of their choices to cope with their struggles. Others just need to consider this as an investment in themselves. Either way, we would be glad to process this decision with you.

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ- to the glory and praise of God." Philippians 1:9-11

Online Support Groups
Online support groups are a vital part of individual growth. It has been our experience that there is a lot of shame surrounding unwanted sexual behaviors. That toxic shame will typically lead someone to isolation and disconnect from authentic community and relationships. Our online support groups will be one way to help you get connected with other individuals in similar struggles and provide a place for you to start practicing how to develop healthy relationships with other men. That is why the majority of the clients we work with become part of one of these groups. There are things that individual coaching can offer and things that it can not. Same thing goes with group work. That is why most of our clients do both. However as we do an initial assessment with you, we can help determine if one of our online support groups could be a good fit for you given your circumstances.
These online groups are currently be held through Zoom. There is both video or phone connection for the group.
